5th Grade Organ Projects

5th Grade students studied the different organs in their science classes and completed a project where they wrote an expository piece about the organ they chose, and then created a model of the organ and labelled it.  Check out some of the great work our 5th graders did.

Medical Timeline Mural

We hired local mural artist, Eddie Powers to create a medical timeline on the roof of our breezeway.  Check out some of the pics below of the magnificent work that he has completed thus far.  I'll add more pics once the whole thing is completed.

Magnet Mania and More

Florida Times Union article about Magnet Mania and More.

See the article above, if you look trough the pictures, you'll see a little piece of our display.  We had a great time talking to all the parents during the event.  It sounded like many people were very excited about the program we have to offer and we plan on seeing a lot of people on upcoming tours.

If interested in coming on a tour and seeing the program.  We offer tours every Thursday morning in January and February at 9:30 AM.  On Thursday, January 26, we are having tours at 9 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM, as well as a big open house parent event that evening at 6 PM in the cafeteria.  Hope to see you there!

Olympic Gymnast Shannon Miller pays a visit

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Miller visited our students today for a pep rally to kick off her Shannon Miller Running Club that students are going to be participating in for the next 12 weeks at Woodland Acres.  She talked to the students about the hard work it took to be the best in the world at something and that if you keep trying, you can make your dreams happen.  Students will be working to run laps during recess and PE and earning a foot on their key chain for every five miles they run.  The program is designed to get children active and learn about living a healthy lifestyle.  Students will be working on building their stamina so they can participate in the Shannon Miller Fun Run on April 7th in Downtown Jacksonville.  As a school, we are going to see how many miles we can rack up.  Keep checking back to see how far we go!

Looking for something to do over winter break to stay sharp?

Attached below is a link to the DCPS Winter Break packets.  These packets provide practice to help students to continue to learn even while home over winter break.  Many students regress over the almost three week break, so these activities help to prevent that regression.

Besides, you can only play with all the new presents for so long, right? :-)
